BIOTECH LAB & OFFICE TI
One of many ongoing projects for a local biotech company, this project occurred in three phases. Phase 1 involved Core & Shell improvements to create a two-level mechanical platform within the building. Phase 2 added an interstitial support structure and moment frame across the entire building to accommodate the mechanical, plumbing, and electrical services that were unable to be suspended from the existing roof framing. Finally, Contract Documents and Construction Administration for various tenant improvements throughout the building totaled to 22,000 SF of dedicated lab space and 28,000 SF of renovated office and support spaces. Lab spaces included chemistry, product development, and NMR.
SEATTLE PHARMACEUTICALS TI
Continuing services for a Seattle-based biotech company providing programming, architecture, interior design and lab planning. Six separate phases (including Lab, Vivarium, and Office Renovations) have created three full floors of corporate offices and research labs. Set in a downtown high-rise the project takes advantage of its setting: administrative areas feature private offices at the perimeter with glass walls that allow daylight deep into the open office areas. Similarly, the lab floors were planned with shared offices and labs at the perimeter and support functions at the interior.
BIOCONTAINMENT LABORATORY
This BSL-3 laboratory was designed to accommodate and safely support several investigators’ research simultaneously. The laboratory is composed of two independent suites each containing biosafety cabinets (BSC) that function as engineered work areas with filtered directional airflow and serve as the primary containment barriers where infectious agents can be safely manipulated in open containers. Each BSC is supported by two dedicated cell culture incubators. One suite also contains a flow cytometer/cell sorter. Each suite is served by its own gown-in/shower-out rooms. Safety features include differential air pressure alarm/monitors at each door, welded stainless steel duct work for both supply and HEPA-filtered exhaust air, 100% redundant supply and exhaust systems fans so that routine maintenance issues can be addressed while maintaining full operation and an emergency generator that can maintain full activity levels during power failures.
PUBLIC HEALTH RESEARCH LABS
A 16,800 square foot off campus facility for academic research into communicable diseases, this project includes teaching and research wet labs, faculty and staff offices and support functions including a lunch room. Work rooms and libraries were provided for student participation in this newly formed department and gathering spaces such as conference rooms and break-out areas were distributed throughout to foster easy communication and exchange of ideas. There are wet labs for both teaching and research including, a cold room, five BSL-2s and two BSL-3s and an autoclave.

199 E. BLAINE
Stock & Associates worked closely with a long-time client on this initial tenant improvement in a new building which consolidated their laboratory and office functions under one roof. The 109,000 sq. ft. three story facility houses both laboratory and office spaces. Laboratories and support rooms are now located on one floor; they include Chemistry, Biology and NMR labs. The office floors provide a shared work environment for collaborating departments by providing comfortable and inspiring spaces for interaction in the break rooms, roof-top deck, and casual meeting areas. Internal stairs were designed in a light filled atrium featuring a coffee bar. Stock & Associates, Inc. provided full architectural and interior design services that included programming, space planning, laboratory design, and interior design services.
Testimonials
“Working with Stock & Associates was a unique experience. They took the time to listen to our vision and used their expertise to pull it off. Bruce Stock has an extremely calming presence and was a great advisor and asset to the team. They have expertise in setting up a lab facility and are well-versed in de-mystifying the permitting process. I would certainly work with them again.”
“As a facilities consultant, I have worked on approximately 100,000 square feet in technical and manufacturing projects with Stock & Associates. Their teams are skilled in their attention to detail, especially with challenging technical systems. Not only are they capable of creating beautiful architectural designs that can meet FDA requirements, they are excellent at coordinating value engineering without compromising the customer’s needs. By integrating scientists and other technical personnel into the design process, they were able to create environments where they are happy to work. Stock & Associates truly knows how to balance function while enhancing the form.”
