Stock & Associates produced the following study of the potential renovation options of an abandoned winery. The stone structure was built in two phases in the late 1800s and the winery function was closed by prohibition. The building was later modified and used to process perlite. It was abandoned in the 1960s or 1970's and is in desperate need of repair.
The perimeter walls of the building are unreinforced masonry and have been damaged by multiple earthquakes. The study examined the options for a structural retrofit which would avoid dismantling the building stone by stone and explored the nature of the infill structure which would provide the working spaces required by a modern version of a vertical process winery.
